BRIEF BACKGROUND On DUMC’s TIES TO CAMBODIAN MISSIONS
Dahlgren UMC’s tradition of contributing to the support of Cambodian Ministries dates back some three decades, to when Jim and Joan Slater’s family members were missionaries in Southeast Asia.
Prior to entering into the current relationship with Helen, DUMC supported Clara Biswas’s Street Children Ministry. Both Helen’s and Clara’s work is described, along with other Cambodian Missions on this Global Board of Ministries Web Site.
Helen’s most recent Newsletter is available here. Clara’s 2020 Newsletter also addresses the Street Children’s Ministry.
Cambodia, like much of SEA Asia in that region has had a troubled history since the Vietnam War. Widespread genocide by the Paul Pot led Khmer Rouge left lasting scars. The dominant religion in Cambodia is Buddhism with some 95% of the population. By all accounts from our missionaries there the official position of the government strongly discourages (it may be legally prohibited?) evangelizing.
